What Is
Partial Hospitalization?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a substance abuse and mental health treatment program designed for patients who have behavioral issues, stress management issues, and poor coping skills related to mental health conditions or substance abuse disorders. By providing comprehensive clinical care outside of an Inpatient Program, PHP helps patients develop coping skills and support systems to maintain lasting sobriety in their new life.

PHP is proven to be the most effective transition from a residential program to a healthier daily routine. Patients engage in treatment plans and therapy options with clinical staff to gain more structure, then return home to sleep in their own bed and enjoy family life.

Think of PHP as a step between an Inpatient Program and an Intensive Outpatient Program. Depending on the patient’s individual needs, they may qualify for a more acute level of care with a PHP.

What Partial Hospitalization
Looks Like At Psyclarity

With our thorough admissions process, each patient at Psyclarity is evaluated as an individual to understand their unique situation. Each patient’s individualized treatment plan is designed according to their specific substance use or mental health conditions, co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis, and other challenges.

Group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, and other treatment options provide the patient with several hours per day of evidence-based modalities.

Along with recovery peers, clinical staff, and family members, patients will attend several hours of therapy within a set schedule, often two to three hours each day. Once the day treatment is complete, they are permitted to return home in the evening to enjoy time with family, hobbies, and free time.

The goal of Partial Hospitalization is to provide the support systems and structure to achieve long-term, sustainable sobriety and autonomy while balancing the responsibilities of everyday life. Patients who need regular care, but not residential care, are good candidates for the Partial Hospitalization Program.

If you or a loved one are considering PHP, contact our admissions team today for a free and confidential consultation.

Benefits of
Partial Hospitalization Programs

PHP is a less-intensive option than residential care and combines robust treatment with freedom and flexibility. Patients commit to several hours of therapy each day, including individual and group therapy, and return home each night for a sense of structure and accountability.

At Psyclarity, patients have access to medical staff, clinical care professionals, and behavioral health therapists. During two or three hours of treatment, they will experience confidential and supportive holistic care through individual, group, and family therapy sessions.

Throughout the treatments, patients gain new support systems, coping skills, and stress management skills to address and overcome addiction and mental health challenges.

Substance abuse and mental health disorders can be challenging. We’re here to provide the support and structure for sustainable relapse prevention and long-term sobriety and wellness.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program often comes at a lower cost than residential treatment, since it’s limited to several hours a day and not a 24/7 treatment approach. In addition, having day treatment sessions integrated into the regular routine helps patients plan for the transition back to sober and healthy everyday life.

Questions? We Have Answers.

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about partial hospitalization programs.

What Stage in Recovery is Before PHP?

Before you enter a PHP, your care team may recommend your admission to an inpatient treatment or residential treatment program. However, not everyone’s recovery plan is the same. Your care team will create a plan that is the best fit for your needs.

How Will I Know if I’m Ready to Transition From Inpatient to a PHP?

If you have completed an inpatient program and are not yet ready for outpatient, your care plan may include a PHP. Our team of clinicians will monitor your progress closely and determine when you are ready to advance to your next level of treatment.

You will not be advanced to your next stage of care until both you and your care team feel it is the best course of action for you.

How Long is Someone in a Partial Hospitalization Program?

There is no definitive answer to how long someone stays in PHP. You may spend anywhere from a few weeks to even months in this level of care, depending on your physical condition, emotional wellness, and readiness to advance to the next stage in your recovery.

Your care team will work closely with you throughout your recovery journey to ensure that you are transitioning to the next stage of recovery at a pace that is most comfortable for you.

What Therapies Occur in PHP?

The modalities used in a partial hospitalization program are often the same as those in other levels of care. These modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family therapy, and others.

The main difference, however, is that in a PHP program, you will participate in these therapies during the day and leave the facility in the evening.

I Have Transitioned to a Partial Hospitalization Program But I Fear I Am At Risk for Relapse. What Should I Do?

If you feel that you are at risk for relapsing, it is crucial that you speak with your care team as soon as possible to determine the best next steps, which may include an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or outpatient program for addiction treatment.

Recovery is a lifelong commitment and the temptation to relapse is not an uncommon one. It is our goal to provide you with the necessary tools, resources, and coping skills needed to move forward and remain clean and sober.
