What is the Difference Between
An Outpatient Program &
An Intensive Outpatient Program?

An outpatient program is a mental health or addiction recovery program that allows the patient to attend school or work while also attending individual therapy and group therapy for several hours per day. It’s the treatment program with the most flexibility without sacrificing efficacy.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is an alternative to inpatient services but is considered a higher level of service than outpatient programs. At the Psyclarity treatment center, our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to provide the highest level of outpatient care while allowing the patient the freedom to sleep at home and maintain their typical schedule.

Each program offers individualized care and the support of multiple therapeutic modalities, from group therapy and family therapy to Dialectical Behavior Therapy and individual therapy. It will be designed based on the unique needs of each patient.

Our goal is to meet the patient where they are and provide the level of care they need to attain lasting recovery and personal healing.

What the Intensive Outpatient Program
Looks Like at Psyclarity

We believe that in order to achieve long-term recovery and healing, we must provide holistic and individualized mental health and addiction treatment. Each patient we see receives a dedicated case worker who will design their treatment program with an individualized approach to facilitate their personal well-being and healthy life.

To that end, we offer a broad range of evidence-based and industry-leading therapeutic modalities supported by athletic and artistic activities. From Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to Experiential Therapy, Group Therapy, and Family Therapy, our clinical and therapeutic staff are experienced and equipped to promote personal transformation and ignite the recovery process.

Over a period of eight to twelve weeks, each patient will work through their individualized treatment plan with the compassionate and judgment-free support of our clinical care team. During this time, the patient will participate in private sessions with a therapist or mental health professional as well as group sessions for peer support. Each day will consist of three to five hours of treatment and coping skill development.

Whether the patient is suffering from a drug or alcohol addiction or a mental health disorder, our team is equipped to help them address and overcome mental, emotional, and physiological issues related to their health and well-being. By offering more structure on a daily basis, dedicated case management, and treatment for co-occurring issues, we believe our intensive care forms an essential part of each patient’s healing and recovery process.

After the initial phase of their IOP is complete, our case management team will develop a comprehensive aftercare plan to ensure the patient’s results are sustainable and supported. Each aftercare plan will be tailor-made to suit each patient’s circumstances, abilities, and long-term goals.

Outpatient & IOP: Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions about an outpatient or IOP program? Find answers to the most commonly asked questions.

Is Rehab Covered by Health Insurance?

Most major health insurance plans cover drug rehab and treatment for addiction, including treatment in a detox center. During admissions, your specialist will determine your eligibility with your insurance provider.

Do I Have to Go to Inpatient Treatment Before Outpatient Treatment?

Everyone’s recovery journey is unique and depends on their circumstances, history, struggles, and treatment outcomes. Some people do well with an inpatient treatment program before outpatient care, while others may go directly to IOP treatment or outpatient programs without the need for hospitalization. Your assessment will help determine what program options are best for you.

How Will I Manage My Responsibilities Outside of the Program?

One of the benefits of outpatient treatment is that you get intensive therapy sessions on a set schedule during the day, giving you the flexibility to attend to your responsibilities with school, work, or family in the evenings. Both IOP and outpatient programs allow you to work, attend school, and sleep at home in your own bed after your sessions are complete.

What Happens After Outpatient Care?

IOP and outpatient care can be used to transition into daily life or as a step before remote care or aftercare. These programs offer support and ongoing guidance as you prepare to transition out of a treatment or rehab facility and into your day-to-day life with sobriety.

How Long Is Outpatient Treatment?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. Outpatient substance disorder treatment can last for weeks or months, depending on your individual recovery timeline. Your care team is your partner in evaluating your progress throughout your recovery to help you decide when it’s the right time for the next step.

Is Sober Living an Option While in Outpatient Treatment?

If you’re concerned about returning to your home environment with independence after your recovery journey, sober living may be the ideal option. Also known as supportive living, sober living is a recovery environment that helps people recovering from addictions. You share a space with others on the same journey to learn from one another and build a healthy support system and structure, including chores and responsibilities in the facility.

What Happens If I Relapse in Outpatient Care?

Relapse can happen at any stage of recovery. It’s important that you recognize that relapse is not a failure but an obstacle that indicates you may need a higher level of care or additional support to reach your recovery goals. If you find yourself using drugs or alcohol or returning to past negative behaviors, speak with your care team immediately to determine the next steps. You may be admitted into a more rigorous program to set you up for success in an outpatient treatment program.
