What is the Difference Between
An Outpatient Program &
An Intensive Outpatient Program?

Outpatient treatment is a substance use and mental illness recovery program that treats the symptoms and struggles while still allowing the patient to attend school or work. Our treatment program offers individual therapy, group therapy sessions, and other individualized treatment modalities over several hours. Patients have flexibility to address their challenges without sacrificing the efficacy of the treatment program.

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is an alternative to inpatient treatment that offers flexibility, but it’s more rigorous than Outpatient treatment programs. Our Intensive Outpatient program is designed to provide the highest level of care in an outpatient setting while giving the patient freedom to enjoy time at home and the responsibilities of daily life.

Every program we offer is tailored to the specific patient and their needs. Along with group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy, we offer proven modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and more.

No matter the challenges, our intent is to meet the patient where they are and develop a plan to help them reach the life they want to have for lasting recovery and personal healing.

What does the Intensive OutpatientProgram
Look Like at Psyclarity

Long-term healing and recovery come from dedicated, compassionate, and tailored care. We start with comprehensive clinical and medical assessment to identify mental health disorders, drug addiction, or other challenges.

Once the assessment is complete, we create an individual plan that includes evidence-based, therapeutic modalities, including Group Therapy, Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, all conducted by our top-tier counseling staff.

Each outpatient treatment program takes place over 8-12 weeks and includes day or evening sessions lasting several hours. Depending on the patient, treatment may include three to five hours of private sessions, group sessions, family therapy, or therapeutic modalities to learn coping skill development and relapse prevention.

Together, we can help you overcome mental, emotional, and physical issues related to your specific challenges.

Once your IOP program is finished, we’ll come up with a comprehensive aftercare plan to provide support for a patient’s results as they reintegrate into daily life. Like the clinical and medical assessment, this aftercare plan takes all aspects of the patient’s care, goals, and progress into account for a tailored solution.

What Are the Benefits of
Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

Our Intensive Outpatient Programs in New Jersey are developed with proven and science-based therapeutic practices to address drug addiction and mental health disorders like anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and eating disorders. Patients can seek treatment for their mental health concerns with supportive, compassionate, and knowledgeable staff and a group of peers experiencing the recovery process.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Outpatient & Intensive Outpatient

Answers to common questions about Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient treatment:

Is Sober Living Available During Outpatient Treatment?

Yes. Psyclarity can help you find supportive housing throughout your recovery programs. Supportive housing is a controlled environment specifically designed for people in recovery. When you stay at a supportive housing facility, you will be surrounded with people who share in your experiences, challenges, and goals.

The purpose of supportive housing is to provide you with a longer duration of time in a recovery environment where you can learn additional coping skills and life skills so that you are well-prepared to transition into independent living.

What Level of Care is Before IOP?

IOP drug rehab programs typically come after completion of a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or partial care program (PCP).

I am Afraid of Relapsing During My Outpatient Treatment. What Can I Do?

Relapsing during outpatient treatment is a common fear among those in recovery. Throughout your recovery, you will learn positive coping skills that will help you  stay on your path to healing. If you have concerns about using substances or relapsing into old behavioral patterns when you are in recovery, speak with our clinicians about your concerns. Together, we will devise a plan to help keep you on the right track with your treatment plan

And remember: if you do relapse during outpatient treatment, it is important to be transparent with your care team. A relapse does not mean failure. It is an opportunity to identify triggers, learn, and grow.

Can I Keep My Job During Outpatient Treatment?

Many people keep their jobs while in outpatient treatment. With OP and IOP, you participate in therapies during the day and return home at night. This means you can still attend to your job, school, or family obligations in the evening hours.

What is the Next Step in Recovery Outpatient Treatment?

After you have graduated from outpatient care, you can transition into remote care or aftercare. This next level of care provides you the support you need to maintain your new healthy habits and behaviors while you ease back into a life outside of a recovery environment.

How Long Does Outpatient & IOP Last?

There is no definitive timeline for recovery. Everyone’s experience with healing is different. An individual may stay in outpatient care for weeks or months, depending on their specific circumstances. Your care team will monitor your recovery progress and advance you to the next level of care at a pace that is conducive to your recovery.

How Will I Know If I Am Ready to Transition Out of Outpatient Care?

In a residential treatment program, you will learn the coping skills and positive behaviors that you will employ in outpatient care. Together with your care team, you will transition to outpatient care when it is safe for you to do so.

If you or a loved one are suffering from substance use disorder, alcohol addiction, or a dual diagnosis, we can help. Call and speak with an admissions specialist today to discuss treatment options that fit your individual needs.
