Alcohol use disorder can have various medical, psychological, and social consequences, ranging from weight gain and liver disease to spousal violence, financial loss, unemployment, and congenital disabilities. In many cases, people with a drinking problem may also struggle with drug addiction.
Understanding how alcoholism affects the body and getting professional help at an alcohol rehab are vital to overcoming alcohol addiction.
Although cocaine has long been legally available in medicine, its high addictive potential limits its use in the medical field. On the streets, it’s typically sold in the form of a white powder, crystals, or a rocky material. Cocaine is both addictive and costly, earning it the moniker “rich man’s drug.”
People battling mental health conditions often turn to drugs or alcohol to ease their symptoms. Clinically it is known as a co-occurring disorder. Treating a co-occurring disorder involves more intensive treatment options than if they were only suffering from one or the other. Substance abuse and mental health symptoms become interchangeable and can effectively worsen both conditions.
Cocaine and crack are two of the most dangerous drugs out there, not only because they’re highly addictive but also because they can have serious side effects. These include sudden cardiac death, brain seizures, heart attack, and stroke. Addiction to crack cocaine can start after just the first use.
Methamphetamine is highly addictive and can lead to addiction after just one use. However, unlike controlled prescriptions, meth usage is far more dangerous. It’s one of the most brutal drugs to overcome, and it’s essential that anyone that engages in meth abuse finds professional treatment.
Opioids are medications that are derived or manufactured from the opium poppy plant. Some drugs are prescribed to alleviate severe acute pain or “breakthrough pain” associated with cancer. In contrast, other types of these drugs are created and consumed illegally. Opioid addiction is a severe and growing problem in the United States. Each year, more and more people fall victim to these powerful drugs.
Sleeping pills are sedative-hypnotics prescribed by a licensed medical provider that are commonly used to treat insomnia and other sleep disorders. Sleeping pills are highly addictive and dependency is highly likely after long term abuse. Although sleeping pills effectively treat short-term insomnia, many people quickly go on to develop a physical dependence on them.
